Why Do Mormons Go On Missions?

Two sister Mormon missionaries

Mormons, or members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church), go on missions as a way to serve others and share their beliefs with others. Missionaries serve voluntarily, typically for a period of 18 months (normal length of assignment to women) to 2 years (normal length of assignment to men). Missionaries are responsible for their own expenses, though a lot of enabling resources (cars, housing, etc) is typically subsidized by the church. According to the LDS Church, the purpose of missionary work is to invite others to come unto Christ by helping them receive the restored gospel through faith in Jesus Christ and His Atonement, repentance, baptism, receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost, and enduring to the end (see Doctrine and Covenants 4:2).

Where are LDS Missionaries Trained?

Missionaries are trained at one of the church’s Missionary Training Centers (MTCs) before being sent to serve in a specific location around the world. While on their missions, missionaries are expected to adhere to a strict code of conduct and to devote their time and energy to sharing their faith and serving the communities in which they are assigned. This includes adhering to strict rules regarding behavior, dress, and communication with others.

What Do LDS Missionaries Do On Their Missions?

Missionaries typically work in pairs and are assigned to specific areas, They spend the majority of their time proselytizing door to door or through online mediums and meeting with people and sharing their beliefs. They may also work with local church leaders to organize events, provide service, and engage in other activities to help spread their message. Missionaries are expected to be diligent in their efforts to share the gospel, and they are often required to meet specific goals and benchmarks in order to stay on track and fulfill their assignments.

What Rules Do LDS Missionaries Have to Follow?

LDS Missionaries are expected to follow a strict code of conduct while serving their missions. These rules are designed to help missionaries stay focused on their assignments and to maintain high standards of behavior and appearance.

Some notable rules that LDS missionaries are expected to follow include but are not limited to:

  • Wearing a conservative and professional appearance at all times, including a suit and tie for men and a skirt or dress for women.
  • Refraining from engaging in any form of inappropriate physical contact with others.
  • Avoiding inappropriate or offensive language and behavior.
  • Not consuming any form of alcohol, tobacco, or illegal drugs (although this is true for all members of the church and not just missionaries).
  • Not watching movies or television shows that are not appropriate for their age or mission assignment.
  • Not engaging in any form of gambling or other activities that are not consistent with the teachings of the LDS Church.
  • Not engaging in any form of inappropriate or suggestive social media activity.
  • Following the rules and guidelines of their mission assignment and all the guidelines of the LDS Church.

Why Do Mormons Serve Missions?

Mormons believe that it is their responsibility to share the gospel of Jesus Christ with others and to help bring people closer to God. Going on a mission is seen as a way to fulfill this responsibility and to make a positive difference in the world. It is also seen as a way for missionaries to grow personally and spiritually, as they learn to rely on their faith and to serve others.

Missionary work is an integral part of Mormon culture and is considered a rite of passage for many young members of the church. Mormon men are typically encouraged to serve missions at some point in their lives, while women are also encouraged to serve, but it is not as strongly emphasized. Many Mormons see serving a mission as a way to strengthen their faith and to grow closer to God, and they often return from their missions with a renewed sense of purpose and commitment to their faith.

Who are some notable people in history or celebrities who have served Missions?

In Conclusion…

There are many different reasons why Mormons go on missions. Some do so out of a sense of duty and a desire to follow the teachings of their faith. Others see it as a way to serve others and to make a positive impact on the world. Still others see it as a way to grow personally and to develop leadership skills. Regardless of the specific motivations of individual missionaries, the LDS Church emphasizes the importance of missionary work and encourages its members to consider serving a mission at some point in their lives.
